Prudential thought refers to our considerations and judgments about what is good for us, what makes our lives go well, or what contributes to our well-being.
The core idea is to investigate whether expressivism – a metaethical view that typically explains moral judgments as expressions of non-cognitive attitudes (like desires or approvals) rather than beliefs about objective facts – can also be applied to our understanding of prudential claims. It's increasingly common in philosophy to view prudential thought as a form of normative thought, making it a natural target for expressivist analysis.
More specifically, the paper proposes that expressivists should adopt a particular theory of well-being known as the rational care theory of well-being. According to this theory, claims about what is good for a person are essentially equivalent to claims about what it is rational to want for that person, from a perspective of caring for them.
The article argues for the possibility and advantages of an expressivist account of prudence, suggesting that when we say something is "good for someone," we are not stating an objective fact about the world, but rather expressing a certain kind of rational attitude of care towards that person's well-being. This move aims to extend the explanatory power of expressivism beyond traditional moral discourse to encompass personal well-being.
My opinion
My personal opinion about present day treatment protocols related to manipulation of such prudential expressivsm and tend to tilt towards each individual physicians sense of good. The thought good may be fair for the patient from the perspective of the person in authority in the interaction and introduce decision which may not be the best. This doesn't extend to the medical field alone. Non cognitive attitude guiding our daily decisions , we often call them emotional, remain a human approach which will be challanged by artificial intelligence in near future and unknowingly become the way of life. It will also be the reason for multiple versions of AI each with it decision bial algorithms and soon AI will be antropologised.
